Ben Lawson has been involved in the Indonesian coal and mining industries for more than 15 years. He first came to Indonesia in 1996 for infrastructure projects in S.E. Asia. In 1998 the company he was with closed its Asian offices due to the “Asian financial crisis” and in 1999 he co-founded PT. Motus Gemilang, which is active in the bulk commodities trading and business development consulting sectors.
Mr. Lawson now acts as Chief Operating Officer at PT. Sanaman Coal Indonesia with coal mining concessions in the Indonesian Provinces of East Kalimantan and South Sumatra. He is also currently the Vice-Chairman of both the Djakarta Mining Club and the Coal Club Indonesia, founded by mining industry magnate Caterpillar.
Mr. Lawson was Expert Staff for energy affairs to the RI Minister of Small & Medium Enterprises, and has been a speaker and/or chairperson at the most prestigious coal and energy related conferences. In addition, he has done televised interviews with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), and print interviews / editorials for UBS Bank, Wood Mackenzie, CoalAsia Magazine, Mining & Engineering Journal, the Indonesian Coal Report and others.
Mr. Lawson has acted as Expert Witness in coal related arbitration cases under International Chamber of Commerce
(ICC), London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) and
Singapore High Court proceedings. Mr. Lawson fluently speaks Indonesian, both reading and writing at a contractual/legal level of proficiency and he is blessed with long-standing personal relationships with many of Indonesia’s most prominent public, and private sector individuals.
